Generations before me were left with scars that are unspoken-

Mental health issues, substance use, and dysfunctional family settings that drive us up a wall.

Communities were left broken,

While those who oppressed us embellished it all.

When our ways dwindled,

Our elders decided we needed to reclaim what is ours.

Our ancestors hope is rekindled,

While emergent leaders set the new standard bars.

Dismantling years of curses,

I chose to put down self harm.

Hoping the path I set forward reverses,

For my children are my good luck charm.

Changing what it means to be a present parent within my home,

I own my narrative as a cycle breaker.

The examples I set for my chromosomes,

Becomes what they will look like as caretakers.
